Q. What went through your mind that night when the police telephoned you and said that Bill had had another attack?

A. I’d been praying so long that it was behind us. And for long periods of time, it had been. But now here it was again.

Q. Were you afraid of being alone with Bill?

A. I wasn’t afraid of Bill—but I was afraid of the situation. I didn’t think he’d harm me, but the way he was behaving with others—Well, I wasn’t sure. That was the thing that was difficult for our whole family—trying to understand exactly what was going on. If the problem had been drinking or drugs or something like that—as horrible as those problems are, they’re fairly common. You undergo certain kinds of treatment and you get certain kinds of results. But we had no idea what we were dealing with here. A man who was afraid he was turning into a wolf?
